REVEALED: Our approach to sourcing sustainable cotton
By 2025 we will source 100% more sustainable cotton for all our collections.
Why? Because how we source the materials for our products can have a big impact on the environment and the livelihoods of people across the world.
Our Goal
By 2025, we will source 100% more sustainable cotton for our products. 'More sustainable cotton' means working to continuously improve environmental and social performance on the fields where cotton is grown, including:
- Maximising land-use efficiency/yield
- Improving soil health
- Optimising inputs like water and chemicals
- Decreasing energy use and greenhouse gas emissions
- Promoting conditions that are better for workers and farmers
To achieve our goal, we will work with our suppliers to source more sustainable cotton, through programmes like the 2025 Sustainable Cotton Challenge, whereby we have pledged to achieve a 100 percent sustainable cotton production line by 2025.
Founded in 2017, the 2025 Sustainable Cotton Challenge, aims to increase the uptake of organic and preferred cotton, which has the ability to increase the income of smallholder farmers, eliminate the usage of highly hazardous pesticides, reduce water use and improve water quality and soil health. As of today 22% of the world’s cotton is more sustainable and by 2025, it is the vision of the 2025 Sustainable Cotton Challenge (2025 Challenge) that more than 50 percent of the world's cotton is converted to more sustainable growing methods. Cotton is our single most important raw material – but it is also a resource-hungry crop. As a result, Bloomsbury Mill is committed to moving towards more sustainable cotton production, such as organic. We're already well on our way, with the launch of our new GOTS certified organic cotton cellular baby blankets. As we work towards our sustainable cotton target we’re becoming increasingly confident our cotton is being sourced more ethically and sustainably, and that our continuous improvement of cotton sourcing will have a positive impact on the textile industry, the environment and the world.
