How to Keep Your Baby Cool in Hot Weather

How to Keep Your Baby Cool in Hot Weather

Let’s be honest – getting through a heatwave with a baby is no walk in the park (unless that park has lots of shade, a paddling pool, and unlimited iced coffee). Babies can’t regulate their temperature as easily as adults, which means they’re more prone to overheating – especially during naps and nighttime.

So, whether you’re dealing with sleepless nights, sticky naps, or a little one who’s grumpy in the heat (aren’t we all?), here are some tried-and-tested ways to keep your baby cool, calm, and comfortable – even when it feels like the sun has moved in.

Dress Light, Sleep Cooler

In hot weather, less is more. Lightweight clothing (or just a nappy during naps) can help your baby stay cool and comfy. When it comes to bedding, natural breathable layers – like our organic cotton cellular blankets or muslin swaddles – allow air to circulate, helping your little one drift off more comfortably.

Close the Curtains

During the day, keep blinds or curtains shut in sun-facing rooms to block out the heat. Once the sun’s gone down, open windows to let fresh air flow through. A quiet fan in the corner of the room (never pointed directly at baby) can also help circulate cooler air.

Muslins Are Your Best Friend

Usually reserved for mopping up dribbles and spills, the humble muslin really comes into its own during summer. Grab a couple of oversized ‘swaddle’ ones (like our organic cotton swaddles) and use them in all sorts of cool-down ways:

  • As a lightweight, breathable cover for older babies or toddlers
  • Run one under a cool, tepid tap and gently lay it over baby’s back in a shaded spot for a quick refresh
  • Pop one in your cool bag on a picnic so it’s ready for a chilled cooldown when needed
  • Freeze a clean muslin in a zip bag and use during the day to gently cool baby’s legs or arms

Our organic muslin squares are also great for on-the-go parenting – they fold small and do a lot. Think makeshift bib, feeding cover, and even a picnic blanket for baby-friendly snacks.

Make Bath Time Count

A quick bath in lukewarm (not cold) water before bed can help bring baby’s temperature down gently. Afterwards, pat them dry with a soft muslin or use a muslin swaddle as a lightweight towel – gentle on delicate skin and quick-drying in the warm weather.

Offer Fluids Frequently

Babies may want to feed more often when it’s hot. If you’re breastfeeding or bottle-feeding, follow their lead. For babies over six months, offer cooled, boiled water in between feeds too. Always check with your health visitor or GP if you’re unsure what’s right for your baby.

Find the Coolest Spot in the House

If the nursery feels like a sauna, consider moving naps to a cooler room – even if it means setting up temporarily in the lounge or hallway. A quiet, shaded spot can make all the difference.

Stay Chilled on Days Out

Planning a park trip or a day with friends? Keep your bag light, pack a couple of muslins (they always come in handy), and aim for shady spots. You don’t need to do much – just being outdoors in a cooler space can give everyone a bit of a break.

Small Things, Big Difference

Our organic muslins and airy cellular blankets are just the thing for helping little ones stay comfy – at home or on the go.
