5 top tips for weaning from our resident expert
Weaning is a hugely exciting time for babies as they try new tastes and textures. And at first, it’s all about fun, learning and experimentation. We've enlisted the expert advice of our resident baby expert, Hannah Love, to share with us how to get weaning off to a good, relaxed start...
When it comes to weaning your baby, it can be difficult to strike the right balance. You want to make sure that your little one gets all the nutrients and vitamins they need, but you also need to be mindful of their comfort and preferences.
Here are Hannah top 5 top tips to help ensure your baby weans onto solids well:
Keep milk and meals separate, if you aren't already in a feeding routine now is the time to aim for one.
Reduce overnight milk to help your baby's appetite.
Relax and know your baby will take what they need: you should be in control of what food, when they eat and where but they should be in control of how much they take.
Focus on protein and fats - these are the foods that will keep your baby's calories up. Avocado, egg, nut butter, meat, lentils, coconut cream are all great.
Keep fruit and vegetables to small portions and never offer on their own, this can result in reducing your baby's daytime calories and can also cause tummy ache and wind.
Weaning can be messy, but it doesn't have to be! First, make sure you have plenty of muslins on hand to protect your clothes - and your little one's clothes - from spills. Second, don't be afraid to get messy yourself! Encourage your little one to explore different textures and flavours, and show them that it's OK to make a mess. Lastly, remember that weaning is a process, so take your time and enjoy it.
